There are 3 main categories of pavers that are available:
- Natural Stone Pavers - Made from natural stone
- Concrete Pavers – Made from concrete
- Brick Pavers - Made from clay and shale
The underlying differences between these 3 main categories of pavers influence the suitability for purpose, cost, design, installation procedures, technical and legal standards as well as other factors. |
Natural Stone Pavers |
Natural Stone Pavers |
Natural Stone pavers are made from a variety of minerals by mother nature and they have been formed by natural forces during millions of years in the Earth. They are not made at a manufacturing plant. Stone pavers have a higher acquisition cost since they have to be dug out of the earth at stone quarries, cut to size and shape. Natural Stone pavers therefore will be higher priced than brick and concrete pavers. |
Natural Stone pavers look very natural and appealing. However, Natural Stone pavers have limited applications due to their hardness, strength and density issues. While granite stone pavers are strong enough for driveway paving, marble stone pavers would not be strong enough for driveway paving. |
Light foot traffic is more suited to Natural Stone pavers. Consumers need to be extra careful and undertake thorough research when selecting Natural Stone pavers for their landscaping projects. |
Natural stone can be used in the form as found that is irregular or it can be milled into rectangular shapes. |
Concrete & Brick Pavers |
Concrete and Brick pavers are made by industrial processes involving mixing raw materials and firing at extreme temperatures at the manufacturer’s plant. What distinguishes concrete pavers from brick pavers is the fact that the raw materials are vastly different from those of brick pavers. |
Brick pavers are made of clay and shale material. Concrete pavers are made of cement, aggregate, pigments and dyes. |
Some of the resulting differences between Concrete Pavers and Brick Pavers are texture, color, load bearing, durability and cost. The cost of pavers varies greatly because it depends on of the paver material. |

Concrete Pavers |
Concrete pavers are made of cement, aggregate, pigments and dyes, set in a mold and fired at the manufacturing plant. Concrete pavers have a very broad selection of colors and depending on the manufacturing process can hold up for a very long time. Color sealants may also be used to prevent concrete pavers from losing their color. Concrete pavers do cost less than brick and natural stone pavers because their raw materials cost less to produce. They are also very strong and will work for driveways and even roads, as well as patios and paths. |
Brick Pavers |
Brick Pavers |
Brick pavers are made of a mixture of Clay and Shale. They are also called Clay pavers because they contain clay. The Clay and Shale are mixed, molded and fired in a kiln at up to two thousand degrees at the manufacturer’s plant. Clay and Shale have their own natural properties that make them ideal for producing hard wearing and extra strong Brick Paver products. |
Brick paver colors have a deepness and warmness about them because they contain the natural color of the clay and shale. That means they will maintain their true color for a very long time. There are many and varied brick color offerings, with light, moderate and darker earthy tones. They are mostly in the red and darker tones and do not have the extensive color variety offered by concrete pavers. |

A driveway is the first thing you and your visitors see from the street, so it’s an opportunity to make a lasting first impression. |
You can give your home curb appeal with a driveway that compliments your home and yard. An attractive driveway can add more value, dollar for dollar, to your home much the same way a bathroom or kitchen makeover does. |

Blue Stone Path Through Garden |
Pavers will add beauty and elegance completely changing the look of your garden paths and walkways, while making them more efficient. With the addition of paved walkways, you will also be adding value to your home while adding to curb appeal. |
Walkways are very important because they direct traffic and provide guidance to your visitors. Paved walkways are less slippery than a muddy dirt pathway. |
By adding walkway pavers in your gardens, and replacing those muddy dirt paths, you are also creating a cleaner environment. No need to have people walking into your home with muddy shoes. Walkway pavers can save you cleaning time each day! |

Patterns and Designs |
When it comes to installing your chosen Patio Pavers, there are a variety of patterns and designs to consider. |
Herringbone |
The herringbone is the most formal of the patterns available and the most popular, it is a zigzag type design and is ideal for the cover-up of irregular areas. |
Running Bond |
The running bond is a simple yet versatile pattern type. It is also very popular for use on Patios and small areas. Pavers are laid at an angle to create a curve pattern. |
Basket-Weave |
The Basket-Weave pattern is suitable for casual applications. This pattern is often used with another type of design, or it can be used alone. Pavers are laid vertically and horizontally in pairs. |
Circle Design |
The circle design pattern is a popular and sometimes difficult design to install, where pavers are laid in a circle design, creating the curves can be challenging. |
Fan Design with Border |
The fan design brings a pattern of gentle arches, and is generally applied to walkways and driveways also. |
Random Design |
The random design pattern involves the use of about four different sizes of pavers for the one application, creating a bold effect. It is also used for walkways and driveways. |
Mixed Design |
The mixed design pattern involves the use of about three to four different shaped pavers, often used for borders, the Circle design and the Fan design. |
